"Bearman's" Yellowstone Wolf

2001 Final Puppy Count

©Kevin Sanders

It has become increasingly more difficult to obtain an accurate count on new pups born each year. As packs increase in size, in number, and occupy more remote areas of the ecosystem. Here is what we have to date.

For current up-to-date information on yellowstone parks wolf population go to:

Druid Peak Pack

Alpha female # 42F denned about 2 days after we thought she should have, at the traditional den site, 5 pups observed.  Her daughter 105F denned in the old den of Rose Creek no. 9F, but then abandoned the den site and no pups were observed.  No. 103F denned just west above Slough Creek and 3 pups have been observed so far. No. 103 recently within the past day or so moved her den. The location is unknown to me at this time. This pack has enlarged their territory the past few weeks to include area once occupied by the Rose Creek pack.  Number 106F is said to look pregnant but has not localized. We have observed the alpha male, no. 21M traveling back and forth attending both the den site of no. 42 and no. 103, about 4 miles apart.

Rose Creek Pack

The pack has localized and the alpha female has probably denned, but at a new location. This large pack has actually split into several sub-packs. (The two packs have now been renamed; Tower pack and Rose Creek pack). 7 pups have now been observed with this split pack.

Leopold Pack

Number 7F has denned , but this year she chose a new den site on the Blacktail Deer Plateau, further to the west.  Three pups have been observed. No. 152F also has two new pups.

Taylor Peak Pack

The alpha female of the Taylor Peak pack was seen by her den on April 7th. Pups have been observed but no count yet. The pack recently moved the den farther into the mountains.

Nez Perce Pack

This pack has localized in their traditional range near Nez Perce Creek south of Madison Junction. No pups observed yet.

Chief Joseph Pack

The Chief Joe pack was last located near their traditional den site near Daly Creek/Specimen Creek inside the NW corner of Yellowstone. Last year they denned outside the Park near a horse corral in Cinnabar Basin. Three pups observed.

Washakie Pack

A member of the pack was observed near the pack's old den on April 9. Only one member of this elusive pack is radio-collared. Efforts to try and collar more ended on April 11.

Mollie's (Crystal Creek) Pack

Probably denned but alpha wolves are not known at this time. Six pups have been observed at the den site in Pelican Valley.

Yellowstone Delta (Soda Butte) Pack

Denned but alpha wolves not known. Four pups have been observed at the new den site. Local outfitters have attempted to disrupt or chase off the wolves by riding horses through the den site area.

Sheep Mountain Pack

Denned but alpha male not known. No pups.

Sunlight Basin Pack

Probably denned.

Swan Lake Pack

Probably denned

Teton Pack

Denned but alpha's not known

Beartooth Pack

Probably denned but alpha male not known

Absaroka Pack
