Directions to Mammoth (Albright) Visitor Center

© Kevin Sanders 2008

I Meet guests for the winter, spring and fall wolf viewing tours at Mammoth (Albright) Visitor Center. The Visitor Center is very easy to find and is located up within the main upper complex.

After entering Yellowstone Park at the Gardiner, Montana Entrance the road twists and curves up in elevation.

Note: When you enter the park at odd hours, the entrance station will not be manned by a ranger. Just drive on in. You can pay later when you exit the park- --Read More About This.

After a couple of miles you will enter the lower complex consisting of a residental area for park rangers on the left and in front, and the Mammoth Campground will be on your right.

Note: The location on the map where you enter this lower complex is where you see the line marking "To North Entrance and Gardiner" on the right side of this road map. The residental area is not noted on the road map.

Continue past the campground and the road curves sharply uphill to the right and climbs up above the campground which will still be on your right but now down below you. As you get to the top of this last hill you will enter the upper complex with the Mammoth Medical Clinic and then the large historic Yellowstone Park Post Office, both on your left.

The Visitor Center is located to the right of the Post Office and just out of this frame. The Clinic is just out of frame on the left.

You will also see the large 4 story Mammoth Hotel as seen in the picture below. The elk may or may not be bedded in the grassy median strip as shown in this photo. Note: The Clinic and Post Office are directly to the left of the photographer who took this picture. The Visitor Center is just out of frame on the left at about 11 O'Clock. Make a left turn where you see the white SUV in this picture. The two story Engineers Building is to the right of the SUV.

This is a view of the Mammoth Hotel from the front looking back down the road you just drove up. If you get this far, you've gone a few yards too far. The Visitor Center is located just out of frame to the right of scene, and caty-corner across the street from the Hotel.

This is the Mammoth (Albright) Visitor Center. The Mammoth Post Office is located to the left of this shot and the Mammoth Hotel is directly behind, and across the street from the photographer who took this shot.

This is what you will see when you make your left hand turn as previously indicated.

The parking area is located in front of the Visitor Center and is where I park. At the early hour that we meet for wolf viewing tours I am generally the only vehicle parked and waiting. I drive a blue Chevy Astro van with BEARMAN on the license plate (number plate for my UK guests).

I typically arrive early unless I encounter large herds of elk or deer on the road, in which case I should arrive right on time.

The distance from the Gardiner Entrance to Mammoth Visitor Center is 5 miles and takes about 15 minutes or so to drive. Semi-heated bathrooms are open 24 hours per day. They are located in the basement of the Visitor Center. The Mens room door is located, front right and the Womens room is located front left.

In late August, Sept. and early October I usually like to stand up on the front porch while I am waiting. During August and September I--we, may have to park over by the hotel or some other location due to the amount of cars parked in front of the Visitor Center, and then walk over so you may not see my van. Look for me on the porch.
